Do Not Claim What You Gave Back

Do Not Claim What You Gave Back

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: He who claims his gift or charity back is like a dog which eats his own vomit”.  (Bukhari, Muslim)

To claim a gift or charity back after it was happily given is very distasteful.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him simulate it with a dog eating his vomit to show how nasty and revolting this is. Why?

1- When a person gives another something, the ownership of what he/she has given went to the new owner i.e. it is no longer his (unlike lending)

2- When a person gives another a gift or charity, he is in fact placing it in Allah’s hand, and regardless of what the recipient does to it, Allah the Highest will increase it and multiply it several times for He said:

WHO WILL GIVE ALLAH A BEAUTIFUL LOAN AND ALLAH WILL INCREASE AND MULTIPLY IT FOR HIM MANY TIMES, AND ALLAH HOLD AND GIVES AND TO HIM YOU SHALL RETURN”.  Baqarah 245

And also said: “WHO SHALL GIVE ALLAH A BEAUTIFUL LOAN AND HE WILL MULTILY IT FOR HIM AND WILL HAVE A GENEROUS REWARD”.  (S:57  A:11)

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him also said: “Who gives a charity from good and pure earnings, and Allah accepts the good and pure only.  It will be as if he put it in The Merciful Hand, and he will nurture it as one of you nurtures a foal or a plant, until it grows to be like a mountain.  (Mowata, Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmed)

Therefore, who wishes to claim his charity or donation back, he is taking it of Allah’s hand, not wishing Allah to increase and multiply it for him.

3- Claiming a charity or donation and even a gift back is like to cause hurt to the person it is taken from, even if just emotional upset.  This hurt renders our charity null and void, for Allah the Highest said: “YOU WHO BELIEVE, DO NOT RENDER YOUR CHARITY NULL AND VOID THROUGH REMINDER AND HURT”.  (S:2  A:264)

Unfortunately, some of us may claim their donation, charity or gift back when some upset happens between them and the person they gave it to.  In doing that, they loose Allah’s great reward, cause hurt to others which is a sin.  Also may incur Allah’s anger and we ask Allah to protect us from His anger.
